Charles Murray's receives the Honorary Doctoral Degree in Social Sciences
During this Commencement Ceremony, celebrated at the Universidad Francisco Marroquín on February 8th of 2008, Charles Murray is awarded with the Honorary Degree in Social Sciences. The President of the University, Giancarlo Ibargüen S., introduces Dr. Charles Murray’s work, describing several of his books, such as Losing Ground, published in 1984, where Dr. Murray criticizes the Social Welfare Programs that frequently worsen the situation they intend to mend. He also mentions the controversial The Bell Curve, book in which Murray discusses the relationship between IQ, and social well being.
During his acceptance speech, Dr. Charles Murray gives advice to the graduates about “what they should do the following week”, this being to live in a foreign country supporting themselves in order to pop out of the bubble they have lived in all their life and discover their true abilities.
Dr. Murray also recommended the graduates to “love what they do for a living” , since this is one of the real measures of success . Murray also encouraged them to remember that the twenties are not a period in life to make a lot of money or become famous, but to learn who they are and what they like to do .
During this interview Dr. Murray was approached with the question of what being a libertarian meant to him .
