The College Freedom Forum is an initiative of the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), an organization that promotes the defense of human rights around the world. In the eighth edition of the event held at the Universidad Francisco Marroquin, the Director of Education and MPC, Ronald Flores, hosted Anna Chekhovich, a Russian activist and financial manager for the Anti-Corruption Foundation. Anna, originally from Russia, has been combating the oppressive Putin regime for eight years. In this interview she shared her experiences and insights on the ongoing fight against corruption and authoritarian regimes.

The future of democracy depends on the younger generation. So I think it's very important to be aware of what's happening in your country and everywhere in the world.”

Chekhovich urged youth to become more politically engaged and active in global struggles for freedom. Her journey as an activist began in 2017 when she joined Alexei Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation, driven by an eye-opening protest rally she attended at the age of 24. There, thousands of Russians rallied against the corruption of the Russian government, sparking a personal awakening. Inspired by Navalny’s efforts, she took a stand and joined the opposition movement, realizing she could no longer remain indifferent to the injustice around her.

You can change something, and even with a small step, you can contribute to this bigger cause.”

Throughout the interview forum, Chekhovich emphasized the crucial role of technology and social media in organizing resistance and raising awareness, particularly in countries like Russia, where free media is heavily censored. As an advocate for critical thinking, Anna emphasized the importance of seeking credible sources of information, particularly in a time when misinformation runs rampant. She encouraged young people to question one-sided narratives and engage with others who share similar concerns. Moreover, Chekhovich spoke candidly about the emotional toll of activism, stressing the importance of maintaining mental health and staying resilient in the face of adversity.

I would say that I have way more hope for younger generations to change something. Because the future belongs to them.”

Finally, Anna urged young activists to remain steadfast in their pursuit of change, despite the obstacles they may encounter. She concluded, inspiring the audience to persevere in their quest for a free and democratic future.

Life is not easy if you decide to become an activist, but it is definitely worth doing.”
