Graduation Honorary Doctoral Degree LiberalismTyler Cowen delivered a speech to the Universidad Francisco Marroquín graduates, pointing out that their life expectancy is likely to surpass that of their parents and grandparents. He attributed this progress to the accelerating pace of scientific and biomedical advancement, which is fundamentally reshaping the world we inhabit. From Cowen’s perspective, although navigating this rapidly evolving landscape may at times feel confusing and disorienting, it ultimately constitutes an extraordinary privilege.

Following this, Cowen underscored the critical importance of education in equipping individuals to thrive amid such transformative change. He argued that students must receive a principle-based education in order to cultivate the intellectual flexibility necessary for the future. In this context, he praised Universidad Francisco Marroquín for its instilling solid foundational values of liberty and freedom more thoroughly and consistently than any other institution he has encountered. However, he warned that such principles must be exercised with a deep sense of responsibility. Among the principles he highlighted were individual freedom, economic freedom, political freedom, and religious freedom.
