Simbolismo y uso de artrópodos entre los antiguos pueblos mayas
In this lecture, Hansy Better introduces the basic concepts of her recently published book, and describes how her firm employs these ideas in daily projects.
Where are the Utopian Visionaries?, published in 2013, is a guide to designing socially and environmentally mindful projects in consideration of today’s cultural and economic limitations. The book collects of world-class, international contributions, such as that of Simón Vélez and Balkrishna Doshi. Architects share strategies for conscious building, and showcase social projects that engage communities and their needs. According to Better, the architect is no authoritarian. On the contrary, form stems from social interaction and culture. When creating for a community, the designer should strive to delay consciousness, embrace ambiguity, and should avoid material and color homogeneity.
Studio Luz, Better’s firm, is a venture that intends to link social concepts to design and material expressions. Better describes the design challenges of building this way. Creating a sustainable, affordable, single-family home requires a unique form of balance. Designing multiple-housing projects that abide by historic preservation guidelines and encompass community needs is a different type of test. Better encourages us to look at architecture and design as an interactive, social process that should eliminate boundaries, influence communities, and adapt to its users.
