Lawrence H. White, PhD, is an expert in banking and monetary policy. He is professor of economics at George Mason University and the F. A. Hayek Professor of Economic History in the department of economics at University of Missouri – St. Louis. Lawrence H. White visited Universidad Francisco Marroquín from June 22 to 27, 2009. During his visit he offered lectures on the free banking system, monetary institutions, and the Clash of Economic Ideas.

White, PhD, describes the economic theories that arose to explain the US economy during the 1920s and the crash of 1929. Dr. White’s current book project, The Clash of Economic Ideas, explores the history of economic theory and how these ideas continue to shape policy debates today. In this talk, Dr. White describes the 1929 financial crash in the United States, emphasizing the contrasting views held by economists Friedrich A. Hayek, John Maynard Keynes, and Milton Friedman. During the presentation, Dr. White also examines these economists' views on prices and production, savings and investment, monetary expansion, and the gold standard.
