Patrik Schumacher

Honorary doctorate in social sciences

Director of Zaha Hadid Architects where he maintains an active role in the development of all the projects, as the Senior Designer of the firm. His completed projects include de MAXXI Centre of Contemporary Art and Architecture, Rome. This project won the Stirling prize in 2010.

Schumacher studied architecture from the University of Stuttgart and at the Southbank University in London. He also studied philosophy at Bonn and London Universities. He received in 1990 his PhD at the Institute for Cultural Sciences at the University of Klagenfurt.

He has been teaching in several architectural schools in Britain, Continental Europe and the USA. Also has theorized about architecture from the perspective of Economics and has introduced the concept of Parametricism in architectural design. He has many written many books, such as The Autopoiesis of Architecture (Vol. I and II), , Design as Second Nature (2018), and many others.
