Synopsis

Michael Strong is the author of the bestseller The Habit of Thought.  This book describes the theory, practice, and vision of Socratic practice, a novel and increasingly widespread approach to classroom instruction.  In this seminar, Dr. Strong demonstrates the Socratic method with a group of students by analyzing the text "The Creative Powers of a Free Civilization," published in The Constitution of Liberty by Friedrich A. Hayek.  First, they discuss the text in general terms, then analyze and deconstruct a paragraph. Finally, Dr. Strong, in order to enhance the discussion, poses a provocative question about freedom of action.  The seminar ends with final comments from the students about the positive and negative aspects of the Socratic dialogue.
