activist advocacy CFF2025 civil rightsThe College Freedom Forum is an initiative of the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), an organization that promotes the defense of human rights around the world. In the eighth edition of the event held at the Universidad Francisco Marroquin, the Director of Education and MPC, Ronald Flores, hosted Joey Siu, Hong Kong Activist and HRF Freedom Fellow. Joey shared her insights as a leader in the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, which started in 2019. Her activism, initially sparked by the government’s threat to introduce an extradition bill, evolved into an international campaign for Hong Kong’s freedom. During her interview, Joey spoke passionately about the need for liberty, emphasizing that the struggle for democracy in Hong Kong is part of a broader global fight against authoritarian regimes.
Once you take that tiny baby step, you will have the momentum going, and just very naturally you're gonna be able to build on that momentum and do great things.”
Joey shared that her journey into activism began at age 20, when she became vicepresident of her university's student union. Her involvement in organizing protests, civil discussions, and social movements led to unwanted attention from the Hong Kong government, which eventually forced her to flee to the United States in 2020. Joey explained that despite being a target of an international warrant issued by Hong Kong, Joey continues advocating for freedom and democracy worldwide. Her perspective on activism highlights the importance of unity and collective action across borders.
I think you would really be able to enjoy the clashes between these new ideas and then open your horizon more to everything that's going around in the world.”
Reflecting on the role of media in activism, Joey noted how social media played a critical role in the success of Hong Kong's 2019 protests. She discussed how digital platforms allowed leaderless movements to thrive, facilitating the organization and dissemination of information that was crucial in challenging the authorities.
Looking ahead, Joey encouraged young activists to see their struggles as interconnected with those fighting for democracy and human rights globally. She stressed the importance of solidarity, stating that the fight for liberty is a shared cause that transcends borders.
