Christian Sturm, psychologist and professor, during the conference presents his perspective of the diverse components that should be part of a respect-based design.

Respecting people in your country actually leads to respecting yourself and your environment.”

He starts explaining respect in different contexts and reveals the pattern he discovered from his twenty years of professional and personal experience around the world. He supports his argument by presenting scenarios where he got to acknowledge the social impact of respect, and the lack of it, from society, authorities and individuals in general. Respect can be towards yourself, interpersonal, groups or environmental.

Respect is a deep appreciation for someone or something regardless of their abilities, qualities, or achievements, background gender, race...”

Sturm gives his definition of respect and discusses why he thinks it’s a better approach. He proceeds to associate how design is related to decision making, problem solving and efficiency. Questioning the obvious is the basic principle when trying to develop human-centered design technologies and is one of the most important components of user center design education, explains Sturm.

Respect-based design should be in the very center of design education.”

The psychologist explains the concrete and abstract elements of the user experience. He highlights the key points of the relationship between the researcher and the user for respect-based design, and what behaviors to avoid.  Christian advises on how to teach design based on respect and the relationship this has with guided immersion, meditation, and deanonymization. He ends up emphasizing a phrase by Miguel Ángel Asturias, related to the fact that every human being when making a work, must be supported by conduct, and for Sturm this is respect.
