College Freedom ForumJean-Robert Cadet was born in Haiti, a country where the french colonialism left a strong slave culture even after its dependence. During his childhood he was given to another "family" where he grew up as a restavec, a unpaid child servant that performs all class of domestic work.
He shares how the slaves were treated as properties, excluded from society and forced to work long hours even without eating. As a child, he had an experience that changed his perspective. Horrified of what he lived, he open his eyes to the situation he was living. Years later, the "family" moved to New York where he had the chance to study and change his life. He shares how hard it was to live as a slave and how we must stop any kind of slavery today. He took the decision to write what happened to him in Haiti and after his first publication, he became the voice of child slavery.
