Martin Bechthold, professor of architectural technology at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, talks about new architectural disciplines and recent projects that he has developed with his students. These projects include simulation and prototyping techniques to elaborate new and complex surfaces with more flexible materials and integrating the use of automated construction systems in the architectural process.  Although most are still in the experimental phase, several tools are already being applied, including a computerized tool that uses water stone-cutting technology to produce complex surfaces and the development of a mobile information unit for the Harvard Art Museum.  Bechthold emphasizes the importance of doing research work in every design project in order to learn and move forward with emerging technologies.
